Brené Brown + Creative Living with Jamie = Mind Blowingosity
Brené Brown + Creative Living with Jamie = Mind Blowingosity Brenés authenticity definition, which you can download right here! As Ive mentioned before, Im a huge fan of the Creative Living with Jamie podcast. Sometimes, though, Im slow on the uptake, and I realized last week that I had a juicy Brené Brown interview hanging out on my iPhone, waiting for me to listen to since November. Not one to let an eight month wait stop me, I listened to it anyways, and proceeded to have my mind blown. Im kind of upset about it, since now Im gonna have to buy a hippy-dippy book (which people have been recommending to me en masse, and which I promptly refused since the title was so hippy-dippy) called The Gifts of Imperfection. Like, really?! Yes, really. And Ill be proud to. This is where Id list my a-ha! moment and the things Brené said to convert me to being a big-time fan, but I want you to hear it for yourself first so it wont be ruined for ya (kind of like when my Mom bought me the Broadway cast album of Miss Saigon 4 months before we went to see the show, and after listening to it once I knew that Kim died at the end, and was soooo mad my 8th grade self could just not take it). Itll be the best 28 minutes youll spend all week, hands down. Oh, and if you saw Brenés TED talk and think its more of the same, think again. Here, she talks about the role creativity plays in her life and the lives of all happy people. (Right?!) Enjoy it right here.

The Key to Successfully Not Hiring Someone SHUT UP! - Work It Daily
The Key to Successfully Not Hiring Someone SHUT UP! - Work It Daily Itâs always nice to hear from readers. One woman, who works for a dermatologist, read my article on Bona Fide Occupational Qualifications. Hereâs the issue: You can discriminate against someone if their condition makes it impossible or unsafe for them to do the job for which they are applying. No obese flight attendants. No pilots over 60 being the captain of a commercial flight. But what about not hiring someone with bad teeth to work Reception at a dentistâs office or, as in the case of the woman who contacted me after reading my article, someone who is sunburned wanting to work for a dermatologist? I believe that it is an employerâs right to determine their companyâs corporate image. If you wonât hire anyone with tattoos, no problem. If you only refuse to hire Hispanics with tattoos, problem. Same for requiring good teeth for the dentist and good skin (or at least not bad skin) for the dermatologist. But Iâm not an attorney. This is my personal opinion. I do not give legal advice. If I did, I could get into a lot of trouble. As I like to say on occasion, Iâm crazy, not stupid, and it would be stupid for me to play lawyer. So why did my reader contact me? She was interviewing a candidate for a position at her office. The candidate had a sunburn. She told the candidate that she had a problem with her skin being sunburned. Sounds logical. Over exposure to the sun is the leading cause of skin cancer. Itâs a dermatologistâs office after all! But, the woman is a minority. She left, went home, and filed a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against the dermatologist based on race and skin color. There are minorities working for the dermatologist. Clearly, they do not discriminate based on race or color, and they decided not to fill the position. Hereâs the rub: All of that may be irrelevant. I donât know. But what I do know is that all of this could have been easily avoided. There is no law that requires an employer to tell a candidate why they donât want to hire them. If you donât want someone all you have to say is, âThank you very much. Iâve enjoyed meeting you. We are in the process of interviewing candidates. Weâll be in touch.â I write about discrimination in my book, A Hookerâs Guide to Getting a Job: Parables from the Real World of Career Counseling and Executive Recruiting. If you have a specific reason why you donât want to hire a person, Iâm willing to offer this piece of advice: SHUT UP! If you donât, I can recommend a good attorney⦠Not hiring image from Bigstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!

The Burn Out Gap Disproportionately Affects Women Heres How
The Burn Out Gap Disproportionately Affects Women Heres How A study lumineszenzdiode by researchers at the University College of London revealed that working long hours impacted the mental health of men and women disproportionately. The longitudinal study showed that working long hours led to a significant increase of depressive symptoms for women. For men, however, even those working the longest hours did not experience an increase of depressive symptoms.Over the last 40 years, Americans have drastically increased the amount of time that they spend working. According to a Current Population Survey analysis conducted by the Economic Policy Institute, Americans work an average of 1,836 hours each year. Many factors have led to the significant increase in the number of hours Americans now work. As the economy has become more competitive and globalized, employees are expected to dedicate more hours of their lives to work in buchung to keep up. Advancements in technology such as the crea tion of email, video conferencing, and Slack have also increased the expectation for people to work around the clock.Women are disproportionately affected by this increase in hours in more ways than one. On top of depressive symptoms, many women feel the effects of long hours on the longevity of their careers in a way that men dont. A Harvard Business School study examined an unnamed consulting firm where 90 percent of parteners were men. Though men in the study were as likely as women to say that working long hours negatively impacted their family lives, women were more likely to stall their careers by taking on less challenging roles or cutting back hours to better accommodate their familial responsibilities.Having policies in distributionspolitik such as flexible work hours provide opportunities for all employees to step back and spend more time with their families. But because women are still expected to handle the majority of domestic and care-taking responsibilities, men are l ess likely to take advantage of these accommodations and more likely to be promoted. Because of these expectations, refusing to take time off to attend to personal matters is more likely to cause feelings of stress or guilt in women than it is in men.Though organizations are taking steps to improve work-life balance, progress will only happen when the unfair expectation that women should manage the home is lifted. Thats a societal change we all must be part of.--Kayla Heisler is an essayist and Pushcart Prize-nominated poet. She is an MFA candidate at Columbia University, and her work appears in New Yorks Best Emerging Poets 2017 anthology.

The Secret to Unlocking Local Job Candidates - Spark Hire
The Secret to Unlocking Local Job Candidates - Spark HireThis is the part where I give you the goods right from the get-go Video interviewing is the secret to unlocking your local talent pool. Surprised? Confused? Well, let me explainA common misconception Ive seen time and time again with employers is that they think video interviews are only meant or useful for long-distance candidates. After mulling it over, Ive come up with some possible explanations. First, perhaps employers are only keeping in mind the offerings of a video chat service like Skype. (Read here to learn how video interviews differ from Skype.) Perhaps its the very obvious and memorable benefit of video interviews that comes with elend having to fly out a candidate to screen them for a position. Regardless of the reason, employers can benefit from using video interviews to connect with local candidates. Read on as I discuss two scenarios where this especially rings trueEntice Local Passive Candidates With Video Int erviewsLets first consider the passive job seeker, described as someone who is employed and not actively looking for a new job, but still open to new opportunities. The existing skills gap has made highly skilled passive job seekers quite desirable. How can you increase your access to qualified passive job seekers in your area code? Video interviews.Considering their employment status, passive job seekers are difficult to entice with new opportunities theyre busy professionals that likely have 40-hour work weeks, 8 hours a day. If a passive candidate wanted to hear your pitch or make time for a call, they would have to take time off from work. This reality might cause you to lose a few interested individuals. The beauty of the video interview is the convenience that comes with scheduling. For example, attract local passive candidates with an invitationto a one-way video interview. The candidates can record their video responses to your typed questions anytime, anywhere. Or invite a candidate to a live video interview, where both parties can chat from thecomfort of their own home. Youll certainly improve your chances at meeting highly skilled and highly desired individuals.Screen Local Talent Faster With Video InterviewsThe phone interview (averaging 20-30 minutes) is the traditional method for narrowing down your local candidate pool. However, what if you realize the prospect youre speaking with isnt qualified in a fraction of the allotted time? Out of common courtesy, youre likely to remain on the phone a while longer, wasting your time in the process.Instead of devoting so much time and effort with unqualified individuals in your own backyard, ditch the phone interview and use the one-way video interview to pick up the pace. You can conduct 10 one-way video interviews in the time it takes to do only 1 phone screen. The most formidable stack of resumes wont stand a chance.Furthermore, if you pre-screen with one-way video interviews, you will see a candidates personality, professionalism, and communication skills early on use this information to make smarter hiring decisions as far as who you want to move further along in the process. You might be confident in your traditional hiring methods for nearby applicants, but without video interviews, youre either not discovering top talent fast enough or youre not discovering them at all.Are you satisfied with the way you currently tap into local candidates?
