A History of VC
A History of VCA History of VCVenture capital firms suffered a temporary downturn in 1974, when the stock market crashed and investors were naturally wary of this new kind of investment kenntniserlangung. In 1975 only one venture capital fund raised money, but that was the same year Tandem Computer took $1 1000000 from a venture capital firm. Returns were tremendous for the few firms in the business in the late 1970s.The Federal government lent a helping hand in the form of legislation through this period. In 1978 the government changed the pension plan rules under ERISA (the Employee Retirement Income Security Act), making it possible for pension funds to invest in alternative (and potentially higher risk) asset classes such as venture capital firms. Pension funds represented billions of dollars in capital, so an allocation of even 1 percent of funds represented an enormous increase in the pool of money available to venture capitalists. The industry raised $750 million in 1978. In 1979 capital gains taxes were reduced from 49 percent to 28 percent, so anyone making profits from investing in venture capital firms, or any venture capital firms making profits from investing in private companies, had to pay less taxes. In 1981 the capital gains tax was further reduced from 28 percent to 20 percent. Then came 1983 the year of excess. The stock market peaked and there were over 100 anfangsbuchstabe public offerings for the first time in U.S. history. That year venture capital investments jumped to a total of $4 billion. Some of 1983s funding went to newly founded companies that are todays largest and most prominent firms such as Apple Computer and Intel. Due to the excess of IPOs and the inexperience of many venture capital fund managers, VC returns were very low through the 1980s. In 1991, disbursements from the venture capital firms to their investors hit a 10-year low. VC firms retrenched, working hard to make their portfolio companies successful. The work paid off, and returns began climbing back up. But venture capitalists couldnt take full credit for the turnaround. Macroeconomic forces helped. In the mid-to-late 1980s, interest rates were relatively high, and the price/earnings ratios in the public markets were low. Ten years later, interest rates were low, and P/Es were very high (by historical averages). Pension funds grew dramatically. In 1987 U.S. pension funds held approximately $2.5 trillion. By 1997 that number reached $7 trillion. The booming economy made pension fund managers mora comfortable allocating up to 4 percent of their capital into alternative assets. The U.S. stock market had its greatest run-up in history between 1991 and 1999. Mutual fund assets grew from $1 trillion in 1990 to over $6 trillion in 1999. Finally, the rate of M&A activity has increased dramatically in the late 1990s, creating more opportunities for small, venture-backed companies to exit (cash out) at high prices.Venture capital firms taking portfolio companies public in 1999 experienced record returns. In general, 1999 was a boom year for IPOs, and venture backed firms were particularly prominent. In 1999 544 companies went public, while in 1998 only 373 executed initial public offerings according to Securities Data Corporation. In 1999 271 of newly public companies (nearly half the total) were backed by venture capitalists. On average, these companies have done exceedingly well in the public markets. According to Securities Data Corp. statistics, the average offering size of a venture-backed IPO in 1999 was $87.2 million. This figure represents the average amount of money each start-up company gathered from the IPO. However, the average post-offering valuation (the average value of the outstanding shares in the public market) was a startling $502.7 million.Venture capitalists were greatly rewarded for their efforts in funding new enterprises. According to Securities Data, as of September 30, 1999, the average return for all venture capital funds for the year was 62.5 percent. The venture capital industry is a very cyclical industry. Many industry observers believe 1999 represents the high point before a decline in rates of return. In 1984 45 new venture capital firms were formed and a long decline in returns and capital raised began. The number of new VCs declined every year through 1991, when the industry actually saw 17 more VC firms go out of business than were formed. In 1999 the industry netted approximately 100 new firms. Are we again seeing the peak? Time will tell.

They are frequently preceded by a verbal correction to the employee, called a verbal warning or formal verbal warning, about the performance issue or related performance problems. Components of Letters of Reprimand Effective letters of reprimand have these components. A clear statement of the problem or the performance issue that the employee must improve. The reprimand letter might enumerate several examples of ways in which the employee can change his or her performance to comply with performance expectations. (This provides the employee with a shared picture or shared meaning around the supervisors expectations.)The impact of the non-performance on the employees and the organizations success. (How the failure to perform is having a negative impact in the workplace.) Rebuttals written by the employee are attached to the original letters of reprimand. Following are two examples of formal letters of reprimand. Use them as you develop your reprimand letters. Sample Letter of Reprimand This is an example of a letter of reprimand. Download the letter of reprimand template (compatible with Google Docs and da sagst du was Online) or see below for mora examples. Cover Letter Sample Letter of Reprimand 1 (Text Version) To Jeffery Jones From George Peterson Date September 1, 2018 Re Letter of Reprimand This is a formal letter of reprimand to notify you that your performance is not meeting expected levels of contribution. In your job as a technical expert for customer support, the job expectations were developed by the entire group of technical support experts and their manager. This means that they are the accepted voreingestellt for each technical support experts performance. You are failing to perform in the following ways. The number of customers that you serve in a week is 30% below the standard that the rest of the tech support experts are meeting. The degree of difficulty of the problems you choose to respond to is 40% below the standard that the rest of the staff are achieving. The length of time that customers spend on the phone with you exceeds the rest of the staff by 25%. As you can see, in the three most important performance measurements for your job, you are not succeeding. Your supervisor has spoken with you numerous times and you received additional training. Consequently, w e believe that you are not willing to perform. This is adversely affecting the workload of the rest of the tech staff. We need to see an immediate improvement in all three areas of performance or additional disciplinary action up to and including employment termination will occur. We have faith that you can improve. We need to see immediate improvement. George Peterson, Supervisor Marian Demark, Human Resources Manager Cover Letter Sample Letter of Reprimand 2 (Text Version) To Linda Rodriguez From Mary Wilmont Date September 1, 2018 Re Letter of Reprimand The purpose of this letter of reprimand is to put you on notice formally that your attendance is adversely affecting your ability to complete your job. While salaried, exempt employees are not required to work specific hours, a forty hour work week is standard and expected. You have failed to show up for work at least one day a week since starting your new job and are working only thirty-two hours a week. Your manager has informed you of the availability of FMLA time off for personal or family medical issues. He has also asked you if you need an accommodation so that you can effectively perform your job. He has suggested that you visit the Human Resources department to discuss these issues and your attendance. You have refused all three opportunities that we offered to help you improve this poor performance. The reality is that you cannot perform your job in less than forty hours. You are missing deadlines for your work assignments and your lateness is adversely affecting the work of your marketing department coworkers. They are missing their deadlines as a result of your failure to perform. Additionally, your unfinished work when assigned to your coworkers is putting their workloads into overload since they already have jobs that require forty hours of work a week. This is unfair and we will not tolerate these negative impacts on the workplace starting now. We need to see an immediate improvement in your at tendance or we will terminate your employment. This means that you must attend work five days a week. If you fail to attend work five days a week, you cannot meet the goals for which you have been employed. Our standard paid time off policies give you six paid sick days and two personal leave days that you must use over a year. You must apply for vacation days in advance. You have already used four of your sick days and all of your personal days with your current absences. We do not plan to give more time to you. This leaves you with only two sick days and your paid vacation time that you must request in advance. If you have an absence above your available paid time off, we will terminate your employment. We hope that you understand how close you are to losing your job. You will receive no more warnings. A Sales Resume from a Fundraisers Job
A Sales Resume from a Fundraisers JobA Sales Resume from a Fundraisers JobC.J. Berman thought he welches stuck in non-profit fundraiser jobs, but a new resume proved his sales chops. Its not uncommon for job seekers to talk about leaving the business world to work for nonprofits or charities. Jobs like that might pay less, but the trading the for-profit rat race for work that contributes to your karmic bottom line and is (presumably) mora stable than the hypercompetitive corporate world, might be worth it.Not always, according to C.J. Berman, who lives in northern New Jersey and has had six jobs in the last 14 years as a fundraiser for nonprofit organizations building research funds for everything from AIDS to skin cancer. Some nonprofit jobs can be long term and stable. Nevertheless, organizations that exist by raising money to give it away and hence are judged by how little they can spend on their own administration and upkeep - arent exactly offering tenure.A study released in Feb ruary by TACS, an organization that supports nonprofits, showed that only 30 percent of respondents at nonprofits fear for their jobs this year. Most of those responding were executives and managers, however, not front-line fund raisers a job whose security tends to rely much mora on movements in the economy and specific campaigns being run by specific charities, Berman said.It does feel good at the end of a day to know youve been working to fund community organizations or healthcare outreach or medical research, said Berman, who got his masters degree in social work in 1995 and planned to become a therapist before being attracted into the operation of human-services organizations.I realized I was pretty good at fund raising and organizing events, and enjoyed it. You can really make a difference once youve been someplace for a little while, Berman said. The problem is that opportunities for professional advancement tend to be few, and roles to play are far mora limited than at corpo rations.Bermans ambition to move beyond fundraising and into a marketing role hes finishing up a masters degree in integrated marketing was frustrated partially by the relative lack of online/real-world marketing activity among the non-profits for which hes worked.I want to learn the cutting-edge science in marketing, he said. I was looking for ways to apply integrated marketing, particularly in the digital space and figure out how to make sales. It was frustrated further by the recent decision of his current employer, The American Skin Association, to downsize because of pressures in the economy. He got two months notice that his job would be among those cut.Dislodging yourself from your careerNot surprisingly, jobs in fundraising are hard to find in a down economy. Its even trickier if youre trying to grow into a more responsible position or make the leap into a corporate job.I thought I could continue on the nonprofit fundraising track, but I was having trouble finding ways to a pply my interest in integrated marketing, Berman said. I thought people in corporations wouldnt take me seriously because I didnt have marketing experience. The question was how can I explain that I do a lot of marketing even though I dont work in a marketing department? It felt a lot like I was stuck in nonprofits because nothing I had done seemed relevant to someone in a corporation, he said. Not so, according to Rosemarie Ginsberg, a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders. Ginsberg said Berman didnt realize how directly applicable his proven skills are or how to explain them to someone who didnt live and breathe nonprofit. What he was doing as a fundraiser was the same thing a salesperson does building relationships and organizing events and bringing in money, Ginsberg said. They had goals to hit and prospects to call and campaigns. It may be indirect selling, but youre getting money from people in one form or another, and the ability to put those things togethe r is easily transferrable to the for-profit sector. In many ways, fundraising is harder than sales because what youre selling completely lacks the hard-ROI data CFOs often demand for any capital expense, Ginsberg said. There is a benefit you sell, Berman said. Its mostly psychological Wouldnt it be great if you could help cure skin cancer? If I had my choice, Id rather go out and sell the widget, Ginsberg said. Fundraising is an extremely challenging role. If he can do that successfully for someone in nonprofit, why cant he do it for a for-profit organization?Translating a non-profit resume to salesBerman and Ginsberg went over his resume and qualifications both via e-mail and phone, breaking down the responsibilities of each job and each skill set to identify those that would be transferrable to a corporate role and translate them into language easily recognizable and attractive to corporate recruiters or hiring managers.Anybody can say, I sold more than the three other people in the department, but can you quantify it and then tell me how you did that? Ginsberg asked. Was it your relationship-building skills? Was it your product knowledge? You have to get clients talking about what they do and what made them better at it than someone else. Bermans previous resume, for example, didnt use the same kind of language to describe fund raising that a corporation would to describe sales. We wouldnt use the word quota, but I could say we surpassed our goal by X percent and reached out to this many people, and heres how we structured our campaign, Berman said. I had been trying to give specifics in a way that wouldnt alienate prospective nonprofits, but it just wasnt translating.Going through the process really boosted my confidence. Rosemarie made me think about my experiences in a much broader way, Berman said. Im more able to present things I would have thought of in a more narrow way as being more generally applicable. Rosemarie kept telling me, Dont present yourself just as a nonprofit professional present yourself as a person with certain transferrable skill sets. For example, in addition to cold-calling prospective donors and selling them on the publicity and psychological benefits of making contributions, Berman was the primary or secondary organizer and marketer for fundraising events designed to raise money both from sponsorships sold ahead of time and donations made on site.Ginsberg reminded me that corporations run those sorts of events as well, Berman said. They could be trade shows or events for prospective customers either way, if you can run an effective event, you can run it for a different employer.People dont always recognize their own value or the contribution they make to their employers, Ginsberg said. They think they know what their skills are but dont always understand the value of those skills in terms of how they improve the bottom line or the value they bring to the company. It wasnt easy, Berman said. She made me work rea lly hard in terms of thinking about what I do and how I had all the tools I would need. Im applying for both nonprofits and corporate roles, and I may not want to go corporate. I feel like I can if I get the opportunity in that direction. He was definitely not one of my easier clients, Ginsberg said. Nonprofit is completely different from corporate. He wasnt your standard software-sales guy you could almost write that persons resume without too much input from them, its almost that standard. With C.J., it was a lot of pulling out of him things that could be transferrable.

Employee Breaks and You Finding the Middle Ground - Spark Hire
Employee Breaks and You Finding the Middle Ground - Spark HireHumans as a whole love relaxing and will typically do whatever they can to increase the amount of time spent doing nothing. This is especially true when it comes to taking breaks at work, be it bathroom breaks, lunch breaks, cigarette breaks, or otherwise. Now because the work day is scheduled into very precise blocks of time, you may feel obligated to round up any workers who are taking an extra five or ten minutes during breaks, or not respecting the workplace. This is where I urge you to cut your employees some slack. With this situation you have to weigh your options and see what course of action will be the best for your company. Allow me to paint two scenarios. The first is where you do nothing and let the workers take an extended break as long as they are getting all of their work done. What happens is the workers come back to work a little mora relaxed, they feel less controlled, and they are more efficient with the ir work because they are not harboring any ill will towards the establishment. If they are respecting the workplace, whats the big deal? Now lets say you set some rules in place to monitor how long employees are on break. Now youve given them something to gripe about around the water cooler, and its never good when the employees all agree on something against the company. They wont be disgruntled for only those five minutes you took away from them, theyll be disgruntled for the rest of the work day. That means a lower quality of work and less efficiency across the board. It ends up that those extended employee breaks were a lot more important than the five minutes you got back. See how that gets them to respect the workplace.Employees are not taking an extra five minutes because they need more time to recharge theyre taking it because they dont want to be rushed during their employee breaks. They want the employee breaks to be just that employee breaks. Those extra five minutes sooth e a very different part of the mind that has nothing to do with focus or relaxation. Thats what makes them so much more important than the five minutes spent working otherwise.Dont think of it as an issue of respecting the workplace. Its more about your employees taking a moment for themselves, to feel like they can take control of their time at work other than deciding whether to show up every morning or not. Respecting the workplace would be an issue if they werent even showing up, but thats not the topic of discussion here. In short, let employees blow off some steam its definitely worthwhile in the long run.How do you approach employee breaks? When does taking extra time become an abuse of employee privileges? 5 books by women, about women, for everyone
5 books by women, about women, for everyone5 books by women, about women, for everyoneWomens writing has long been a thorn in the side of the male literary establishment. From fears in the late 18th century that reading novels particularly written by women would be emotionally and physically dangerous for women, to the Bront sisters publishing initially under male pseudonyms, to the dismissal of the genre of romance fiction as beyond the critical pale, tzu siche has been a dominant culture which finds the association of women and writing to be dangerous. It has long been something to be controlled, managed and dismissed.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreOne of the ways that publishers, booksellers and critics use to manage literature is through the notion of genre labelling a book as detective fiction becomes an easy way to identify particular tropes in a novel. unterstellung ge nre designations are particularly helpful for publishers and booksellers, with the logic running something like this a reader can walk into any bookstore, anywhere, and go to the detective fiction section and find a book to read, because s/he has read detective fiction before and enjoyed it.What complicates this is who makes the decision of which genres are deemed to be appropriate, and which books are put into which category. Genre is also complicated by the idea of womens writing. Can we have a genre that is designated solely by the sex of the author? What if we turned this around, and rather than a genre, womens writing was a term we used to simply celebrate writing about women? Here are five novels by women and about women from across the 20th century. These novels all grapple, in very different ways, with women and independence.Agatha Christie, The Man in the Brown Suit (1924)Anna Beddingfeld, a self-mocking heroine, who is very aware of the conventions of gender and genre, im pulsively buys a ticket to South Africa because the boat fare is the exact amount she has left in the world. She ends up taking down an international crime syndicate with aplomb and panache.Lucy Maud Montgomery, The Blue Castle (1926)Doss is the expendable unmarried older woman in a Victorian novel. But in this story, she walks out on her largely uninterested family to move into a cabin on an island with a man she has met only briefly. A fantasy of the Canadian wilderness, the novel was one of Montgomerys few novels for adults.Mary Stewart, Nine Coaches Waiting (1958)A rewriting of Jane Eyre, the novel contains all the tropes of the Gothic romance a castle, a family secret, murder but these are challenged by one of Stewarts finest protagonists, Linda Martin. Martin is employed as a governess by an aristocratic family, but rejects the trappings of romance to protect her charge, and her own integrity.Octavia Butler, Kindred (1979)Edana Franklin wakes up in hospital with her arm ampu tated and the police questioning her husband. It is revealed that she has been travelling back to 1815, where she comes into repeated contact and conflict with Rufus, one of her slave-owning ancestors. A novel that raises important questions about masculinity, power and violence.Shirley Jackson, Patchwork Girl (1995)One of the earliest pieces of electronic fiction, this retelling of Shelleys Frankenstein (1818) and Baums The Patchwork Girl (1913) places the narrative in the hands of the reader, who pieces together the story through illustrations of parts of a female body.Often popular novels by women have a narrative arc that is visible from the outset the protagonists will find a romantic partner in the end. In some of the above books, some of the women do, and some of them dont, find a romantic partner. For those who do, the romance is secondary to the work they do, and the choices that they make about their own lives. What unites the novels is an exploration of the choices that so me women have to make as a result of their sexed and gendered embodiment, whether travelling to South Africa on a whim, being jolted unwillingly back onto a slave plantation, or making an explicit call to the (woman) reader to make choices about how the electronic story develops.Writing about women (and often by women) gives us some examples of how to challenge the status quo, if only for a little while. Each challenge, however, provides another example of how to effect change in a patriarchal culture. Heres to the writers about women who have done this from Jane Austen to Shirley Jackson, from Frances Burney to Josephine Tey, and from Angela Carter to Val McDermid.Stacy Gillis, Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Literature, Newcastle UniversityThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. How to Become a Police Detective
How to Become a Police Detective How to Become a Police Detective For police detectives, solving complex criminal cases is a lot like solving puzzles. Its often incredibly interesting and mentally stimulating work. Working as an investigator offers opportunities to bring closure to families and justice to criminals. At an average salary of $56,000 per year, the job doesnt pay that bad, either - all the more reason for you to want to learn how to be a police detective. First, Make Sure You Want to Do This Before you get excited about the prospect of a new career, make sure that this is what you want to do. A lot of work and preparation is involved in making it into the detective ranks, and it would be a shame to waste all that effort on a job that wasnt for you after all. Depending on the type of crimes you investigate, you may have to deal with lots of blood and gore. If you have a weak stomach or dont think you can handle gruesome scenes, maybe this isnt your line of work.? How You Get Started Criminal justice is full of great careers, but one thing they almost universally have in common is that you have to start at the bottom and work your way up. It is also true for detectives. To make it as a criminal investigator, you need first to become a police officer. That means going through the entire law enforcement hiring process, attending the police academy, making it through field training, and getting off probation. Detective jobs are either promotions or lateral transfers from within the police department. The individual requirements may vary from department to department, but since it is a specialty position, you can expect to have to serve as a police patrol officer for two or more years before youre even eligible to be considered for a detective job. Making a Name for Yourself If, after becoming a police officer, your goal is to make detective, you want to spend your time on patrol making a name for yourself. Just like any other job, your work history matters here. While on patrol, you can develop a reputation as a hard worker, an independent problem solver, and a good investigator by properly, promptly and accurately handling those cases youll have the ability and resources to take care of on your own. Your work product, and specifically your report writing skills, will become very important. Investigative reports are lengthy and extensive, and writing reports is a major part of a police detectives job. If you dont write well, take some report writing classes or a college-level English course to hone your skills. Use the time you spend as a patrol officer to learn the ins and outs of police work, and take the opportunity to spend time with detectives to learn more about what they do and what kind of officers theyre looking for to add to their ranks. It will help better prepare you for the next step in your career. The Selection Process Every police department will use a different method to select detectives from the ranks of their police officers. Some may use a written exam, some an oral interview, and some may just base their decisions off of work history alone. In many cases, it will likely be all of the above. Once you make it as a police officer, learn all you can about the process for your specific department so you can properly prepare for promotion to detective. Worth the Wait A lot of people become disheartened when they realize that they may have to spend years working as a police patrol officer before they can even get a shot at becoming a detective. The time, though, can be very well spent learning about people, laws, and criminal process, all of which will make you a better detective. In the end, the job is well worth the wait, and if you stick it out, you will likely find that its the perfect criminology career for you.

5 Types of Professional Networks and How to Use Them
5 Types of Professional Networks and How to Use Them 5 Types of Professional Networks and How to Use Them 4 To boost your job search prospects, make networking a priority. As you work your contacts, it can be helpful to prioritize your lists, moving from one big network to a divide-and-conquer approach that may be more useful in helping you land a great flexible job. Whats the best way to set networking priorities? Its helpful to understand the overall types of professional networks, as described in a Forbes article on obtaining wealth, and how those networks might work for you in your job search. Here are two major types of professional networks: Expansive. According to the Forbes article, an expansive network is a broad umbrella group of contacts. These can be present and former colleagues and industry contacts who can either speak specifically to your work experience and accomplishments, or offer a broader personal endorsement of you as a potential hire. In your job search, your expansive network may also include people who can connect you with potential jobs opportunities. The group may include family members or friends who can help you steer your job search in the right direction. Nodal. This type of professional network is also known as street-smart networking, which can mean understanding not only the types of contacts within your network, but what what people may be able to do for your career in a specific scenario. In other words, knowing who to contact when in your job search. The word nodal itself means the point in a system or network where different paths intersect or branch out. Typically, a nodal network can be a more narrow subset of people, but also a more powerful group of marquee contacts who may wield influence in your industry, or with hiring managers and other leaders who make hiring decision. In your job search, take advantage of influencers in your nodal network who can speak to your talents, experience, and character. Beyond these two types of professional networks, you can map out your network strategy even further by considering these three network subgroups described in a Harvard Business Review article on how leaders create and use networks. These subcategories overlap to some extent with the professional networks described above: Operational networks: When it comes to your job search, people in your operational network may be in trade groups, professional organizations, or otherwise directly knowledgable or connected to the kind of work you do- or hope to do. Strategic networks. These are contacts who may not be in your career field or industry, but who may be thought leaders and bigger-picture visionaries who can help you with longer-term career planning, or avenues that could lead to a big career change. Personal networks. Fellow alumni, social media connections, and professional-focused meet-up organizations can fall into the personal network category. Constructive Criticism in the Workplace Management Resources
Constructive Criticism in the Workplace Management Resources Constructive Criticism in the Workplace Management Resources Constructive criticism is much more than a routine staff management responsibility. Consistent, concise and honest feedback should also be a recurring feature of any long-term professional development plan. If youâre hoping to train your employees to take on more advanced roles in the organization and meet your succession planning objectives, constructive criticism is one of the most valuable things you can offer as a manager. Helping staff members advance to the next level depends on your ability to identify specific areas for improvement, and to inspire your workers to take ownership of their own development. To be effective, and not be misconstrued as a personal attack, constructive criticism must be delivered properly. Keep the following tips in mind the next time you provide feedback to your staff: Avoid surprises If you summon workers to your office for a formal meeting without advance notice, it is natural that they might feel intimidated â" and therefore, not receptive to what you have to say. To avoid an âambush,â reach out to the employee to schedule the meeting at a time that works well for both of you and explain what you want to talk about. This shows consideration for the team memberâs feelings, and also gives that person time to prepare for the discussion. Be clear and offer examples The ultimate goal of your meeting is to motivate the employee - in a positive way - to improve his or her performance. So, make sure that you come to the meeting prepared. When offering constructive criticism to a member of your team, you want to show that youâve given the matter careful thought. One strategy for preparation is to develop a clear and detailed outline of what you want to communicate. Ask yourself this core question: How do you want the employee to improve - and why? Another tip: Use specific examples to tie your comments and recommendations directly to how the employeeâs performance has an impact on your department and on your teamâs ability to meet specific business objectives. Your feedback is likely to resonate more when there is context. Make it a conversation Even though you may be raising an issue with an employee that he or she may not have been previously aware of, you need to leave room for your staff member to respond or ask questions. Making the meeting a conversation also will help the employee feel more comfortable overall - and likely, more receptive to hearing constructive criticism and resolving to change. Keeping your door open for a two-way conversation with your employee will make it easier for you both to âclear the airâ and develop a plan of action for the future. You will find in some cases that workers will be more inclined to make a change for the better simply because they have had an opportunity to explain to you, person to person, the reasons something happened in the past. Follow up Ending meetings with specific action items is one of the most important steps to this whole process. It shows employees that the organization is sincerely interested in seeing them improve. It also gives staff members a structured path to follow so they can learn how to let go of old patterns of behavior and embrace new and more positive ones. Consider scheduling a follow-up meeting - but be sure to give the employee a reasonable time period to make measurable changes in his or her performance. Depending on the type and level of constructive criticism you have provided, your staff member may need a few weeks, or longer, to fully process your comments and incorporate your guidance into his or her daily routine. Preparation can make all the difference in whether your messages will be well-received. But be aware that some workers will be embarrassed, or even upset, to hear that their professional performance is not up to standards, no matter how thoughtfully prepared your comments are. So be sure to also provide encouragement and support along with your feedback to team members, and underscore that the reason you are taking the time to offer constructive criticism is because you want them to succeed. Are You a Hunter or a Farmer
Are You a Hunter or a Farmer Are You a Hunter or a Farmer There are two types of job seekers. In a market that relies on survival of the fittest, one is more likely to outlast the other. Which type are you?In sales, talent is often labeled as coming in two varieties: hunters and farmers.Hunters are known for: pursuing new business seeking out leads being aggressive finding potential new customers breaking new accounts expanding existing footprints thwarting defections keeping clients loyal generating additional revenues producing new profits In short, they go after wins. On the other hand, farmers usually: maintain the status quo are content to harvest existing customer business are often in maintenance mode One role may be a better fit depending on the market conditions. However, todayâs highly competitive job market demands that candidates adopt the hunter approach. Those who create positions for themselves are labeled âopportunists.â The opposite are âapplicants.â There are too many other qualified individuals wooing employers for the standard âapplicantsâ to win.The farmers are often left waiting in the dust while their proactive, persistent hunter competitors land new jobs. Farmers donât do anything âwrongâ or âbad,â but neither do they do anything innovative. Farming only works if business is already in hand and the competition is asleep at the wheel. Yet this is not the case with the current market. Positions are not abundant; it takes some hunting to scope out potential openings.A buyerâs market Employers today do not have to pursue candidates; they are in the driverâs seat. That means candidates have to jump start the sales process.Today, all job seeke rs are in sales. They are marketing themselves to employers who have lots of choices. With stiff competition for openings, candidates cannot get a job just because they are talented. To get a foot in the door, job seekers need to assert themselves and appeal to employersâ interests. Insist that a new job could be created just to meet a specific challenge. These hunters donât wait for a recruiter to track them down; they pursue what they want. You wonât see them submiting an application and waiting for an interview appointment. More likely, theyâll connect with the hiring decision-maker and position themselves as the preferred solution. Are you going to be a hunter/shopper/opportunist and land a new exciting career challenge as quickly as possible? Choose to network purposefully and connect with insiders who know about potential openings before they are advertised. Show employers that you are a hunter who will deliver for them.

Temporary Help Can Solve Workplace Challenges
Temporary Help Can Solve Workplace Challenges Temporary Help Can Solve Workplace Challenges Bringing in temporary help is becoming a common staffing solution for many accounting and finance departments, especially in larger organizations, and the numbers are increasing for all company sizes. According to the latest Benchmarking the Accounting Finance Function, a joint study released by Robert Half and Financial Executives Research Foundation, 86 percent of firms with $5 billion or more in annual revenue regularly use temporary help, as do 48 percent of firms with $500 million to $999 million in annual revenue and 26 percent of companies with less than $25 million. The study also shows that businesses across North America typically need the most interim support in accounts payable (24 percent), accounts receivable (15 percent) and general accounting (13 percent). Some businesses also tap temporary help to assist with payroll (6 percent) and tax (5 percent). Learn more about how leaders are engaging talent to meet business challenges: GET THE BENCHMARKING REPORT It's a misconception that firms use temporary help just for peak periods. Here are four other ways employers rely on temps in accounting and finance: 1. To try out a potential new hire Executives interviewed for the Benchmarking report said they like to bring in potential hires on a temporary basis for what becomes, in essence, a tryout period. If the person is a good fit for the job and the organization, they extend a full-time offer at the end of the contract. Certainly, these types of arrangements can be hiring strategies to help companies avoid a bad hire. But one executive also reported discovering valuable skills and qualities in interim staff that made them even more attractive as potential new hires. 2. To determine their workload With the global economy improving, many companies are growing and adding jobs. Companies surveyed for the report said they use temporary-to-hire arrangements to assess whether the workload can sustain a full-time hire. They bring in a project professional, and if the person stays busy for an extended period of time, they transition the job into a permanent one. 3. To fill in for an employee on long-term leave Firms surveyed for the report stated that they often use temporary professionals to fill in while employees are on leave. When an employee takes extended time off - whether to take care of a newborn baby or aging parent or because of an illness - the remaining staff that has to take on the personâs workload can quickly get overwhelmed. The help of project staff can alleviate the burden and lower the chance of burnout. Canadian companies have taken particular advantage of this strategy for employees on maternity/paternity leave, as Canada allows parents to take 18 months off following the birth of a child. 4. To provide expertise for a project Some executives interviewed for the Benchmarking report also said they used temporary help for specific projects that required certain expertise. One reported that a consultant was leading the firmâs enterprise resource planning system upgrade, and another had hired an interim accountant to help with the financial aspects of a large-scale project. Another executive experienced this on the flip side: He was brought in on an interim basis to help a public company complete either a sale of the business or a transition into a private company. Are you ready for expert temporary help? Do you need someone who can propel you forward during peak workload periods and make sure you meet your goals throughout the year? We can help! Poor oral health linked to 75% increase of this deadly cancer
Poor oral health linked to 75% increase of this deadly cancer Poor oral health linked to 75% increase of this deadly cancer A massive new UK study uncovered an unsettling link between poor oral health and an increased risk for liver cancer. âPoor oral health has been associated with the risk of several chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes,â commented Dr. Haydée WT Jordo, who is the lead author of the study. âHowever, there is inconsistent evidence on the association between poor oral health and specific types of gastrointestinal cancers, which is what our research aimed to examine.âThe new report pulls from brain imaging and genomic data from 475,766 people over a six-year study period. Analyzing self-reported cases of bleeding and painful gums, loose teeth and mouth ulcers, the researchers enacted an investigation of the correlation between these conditions and risks for gastrointestinal cancers, namely liver cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer, and pancreatic cancer. The study found zero notable associations with dental hygiene in all but one of the gastrointestinal cancers observed in the report. Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Poor oral health was found to potentially increase oneâs risk for liver cancer by 75%. The pervasion of hepatobiliary cancer More than 800,000 people are diagnosed with liver cancer a year worldwide, making it one of the leading causes of death. Direct causes of hepatobiliary cancers are seldom able to be determined resolutely. Typically its development is factored by several underlying causes. The latest study is preceded by research, albeit limited research, that has linked oral health and different kinds of cancer. A U.S study published back in 2017 found that women with a history of gum disease experienced a greater risk for tumors in the esophagus and in their breasts. Another independently conducted study observed a link between oral health and the development of pancreatic cancer in African America n women. Young people, women, individuals living in impoverished areas, and people that consumed less than two portions of fruits and vegetables a day evidenced the highest cases of poor oral health in the latest study conducted by researchers at Queenâs University Belfast. Although a high-risk increase was uncovered as a result of poor oral health, the researchers can only speculate as to why at the moment. Leading conjecture looks to the ever-perplexing gut microbiome. Since the liver is responsible for exterminating several harmful bacteria in the human body, it makes sense that bacteria could conversely play a role in inflicting prolonged damage to the body, in the event of the organ becoming compromised. âOne bacteria, Fusobacterium nucleatum, originates in the oral cavity but its role in liver cancer is unclear. Further studies investigating the microbiome and liver cancer are therefore warranted,âJordo explained.Another theory surmises that people with missing teeth, consume softer less nutritious foods to compensate, which ultimately makes the liver venerable to cell mutations. As it stands, of the 469, 628 participants studied, 4,069 developed gastrointestinal cancer during the six-year follow up, Thirteen percent of these expressed poor oral health at the start of the study period. More research needs to be conducted to support a causal influence behind the findings intimated in the United European Gastroenterology Journal,
